Entrepreneurs, do you agree?
So here's the scariest part about a culture. When I say you need to live it, I mean you need to live it.
You need to hire and you need to fire by it. A lot of founders are afraid to fire by their culture.
What I mean by that is, say you've got a top performer. They technically are a great player, but there's always fighting. People don't like them. You may not even like them.
It's not about liking a person though, it’s about the reason why. The reason why you or other employees don't like that person is almost always because they don't match your culture.
Everyone else does, but that person doesn't, and you let it slide because they're producing.
But the reality is, the impact they're having on everyone else at the company, is a net negative to what they're actually producing.
So you've gotta be willing to fire that employee. You've gotta be willing to say “they may be a top producer, but they don't match the culture - and that's more important at this company.”
You also have to be willing to tell everyone at the company after you do that, the reason was because of the culture, because they didn't match the values.
And if you're not willing to do that - keep in mind what you tolerate, you endorse.
When you allow that to go on, you just send a giant signal to everyone in the company that the values don't really matter, they're optional.
