People often ask me what I look for when hiring.

People often ask me what I look for when hiring.

Of course, experience, a proven history, and technical skills all matter.

But that doesn't tell you how someone is going to show up for you when things get difficult, how they'll treat the people around them, or whether they'll make the team stronger.

Over the years, I've learned the latter matters much more. It's the difference between someone who simply does the job and someone who helps build the company.

The challenge is that you won't find it on their résumé.

That's why I believe every company needs to be clear on its core values. Not because they look as posters decorating the wall, but because they help you recognize the people who genuinely belong on your team.

Looking back, the people who had the biggest impact on our company weren't necessarily the ones with the strongest résumés.

They were the ones who fit our culture, lived our core values, and believed in our mission.

What's one quality you always look for that can't be listed on a résumé?
